It’s almost Halloween, and there are lots of spooky, festive fun to be had. Here are our picks for Halloween events you don’t want to miss.

O‘ahu

3rd annual Halloween Surf-Off

4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu, Turtle Bay

For one of the more unique takes on a costume contest, head to the shores of Turtle Bay to watch as surfers compete in a surf-off benefiting Kahuku High’s surf team (competitors can register day-of for $10). Open to the public and resort guests, spectators can watch from Turtle Bay’s Sunset Pool Bar with refreshing cocktails and pupus then stick around for a live deejay starting at 7 p.m. Free, turtlebayresort.com

Aloun Farms Pumpkin Festival

8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 19–20 and 26–27, Aloun Farms

Fall is falling this October at Aloun Farms with their weekend pumpkin festival featuring all of the autumn things including hay rides, a farmers market, food and craft vendors, carnival rides and keiki activities. Haunted Plantation

6:30 p.m. Oct. 18–20, 25–27 and 31, Hawaiʻi’s Plantation Village

For a real adult-level scare—seriously, leave the kids home for this one—the Haunted Plantation is the place for frights in this theatrical experience featuring more than 60 performers who are definitely not afraid of the dark. Trial of Fears

Dr. Delerio’s laboratory is one haunted house full of frights and extra scares because there’s a chance you might not make it out. Escape room style challenges will determine your fate in this production from Waikīkī Trolley. $35, trialoffearshi.com

Haunted Halloween at International Market Place

4–6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, International Market Place, Waikīkī

For some family-friendly fun on All Hallow’s Eve, pop on the wigs and capes and celebrate at International Marketplace with trick-or-treating at 30+ stores, free face painting and balloon artist, and the chance to take photos with characters. Free, shopinternationalmarketplace.com

Hallow-Zoo

10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, Honolulu Zoo

Royal Hawaiian Costume Contest

2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, Royal Hawaiian Center

Get all gussied up and head to Royal Hawaiian Center for Waikīkī’s largest keiki costume contest, complete with tons of prizes from the center included a gift card and free parking. Hawai’i Symphony Ghost Stories

7:30 and 4 p.m. Saturday & Sunday, Oct. 26 and 27, Hawai’i Theatre

One of the best things about scary movies is chilling music to bring the thrills to life—and Hawai‘i Symphony is using music to bring to life some of Hawai‘i’s scariest ghost stories, narrated by Lauren Teruya. Ward Village Pumpkin Patch

Stop by the South Shore Market Courtyard for lots of family fun including a pumpkin patch, festive photos, face painting, pumpkin spice malasadas and other great activities. Free, wardvillage.com

The Great Pumpkin Festival Weekend

8 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25–26, Holy Nativity School

Holy Nativity’s Great Pumpkin Festival Weekend is two days packed full of fall festival fun. Your festival ticket includes two hours of unlimited activity and game play—no scrip needed! Activities at the festival include petting zoo, face painting, shave ice, character meet-and-greet, contests and more! The school is also bringing back its popular drive-in movies for Flick-or-Treat each night of the festival. Fins & Frights Night at the Aquarium

Boos & Brews Halloween Cruise & Night of the Living Dread

PacWhale Eco-Adventures is hosting a few nights of ghoulish fun with a Halloween-themed boat tour complete with a live deejay and a costume contest with prizes as well as cocktails and appetizers (Halloween night will feature live music with Marty Dread). Meow-Loween Dance Party

Halloween Maze & Keiki Scavenger Hunt

6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, Botanical World Adventures

Get lost in scares at this football-field sized hedge maze on the Hāmākua Coast, full of creepy creatures and maniacal monsters. This maze and scavenger hunt isn’t for the faint of heart, so guests are recommended to be at least 13 years old. Frightfully Fun Movie Nights + Trick-or-Treating

6 p.m. Oct. 25 and Oct. 31, Puna Kai Shopping Center

Get your family-friendly Halloween flix fix with the drive-in movie nights at Puna Kai Shopping Center. The first and second “Hocus Pocus” movies will serve as the October 25 double feature, with “Nightmare Before Christmas” bringing it home on Halloween night. Haunted Trail and ‘Ohana Pumpkin Patch

11 a.m. Oct. 26-Oct. 31, Nani Mau Gardens

For the last six days of October Nani Mau Gardens will turn into a pumpkin patch and haunted trail for plenty of fall fun. Daytime activities are free and family-friendly and include treats, games, time in the pumpkin patch and a kid-friendly version of the haunted trail. The Haunted Palace + Halloween Horror Movies

Oct. 25 and 26, Oct. 30 and 31, Hilo Palace Theater

For two nights only the historic Hilo Palace Theater turns into a haunted house full of immersive scares with this year’s theme, “Stage Fright.” For more theater fun, head back for a screening of “Little Shop of Horrors” on the 30th and “Rocky Horror Picture Show” on the 31st. $10-$25, hilopalace.com

Kalākaua Park Pumpkin Patch

Haunting at the Harbor Spooky Kayak Adventure

Boo at the Zoo

Join Kuleana Education for some daytime Halloween fun, perfect for the little ones. KCA’s Annual Fall Festival

4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25 and 26, Kaua‘i Christian Academy

Bring the whole family out for an evening of fun at the KCA fall festival. Activities include carnival style games, bounce houses, Nerf battle, ninja obstacle course, keiki activities, bubble dance party, Jedi training, cake walk and more.
