What’s Open and Closed on Christmas Day in Hawaiʻi 2024
To ensure you have a very merry holiday, plan ahead and double check what’s opened and closed on Christmas.

After opening presents on Christmas morning, many local families and visitors make it a tradition to hit the Islands’ golden beaches or verdant hiking trails. But there are numerous parks and outdoor attractions that will be closed on Dec. 25. As you start to plan your Christmas morning, it’s always wise to double check what parks and businesses are open to ensure you have a very merry holiday in Hawaiʻi.
What’s Open:
- Most hiking trails and public beaches will remain open.
- On Hawaiʻi Island, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, will be open during its regular 24/7 schedule even on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
- Maui’s Haleakalā National Park will be open on Christmas Day.
- Hāʻena State Park, on Kauaʻi, will also be open to the public as long as you purchase a park reservation ticket beforehand!
- The Pali and West Loch Golf Courses will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. for 18-hole play and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for nine-hole play. Kahuku Golf Course will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. For more information, visit honolulu.gov/des/golf.
Businesses that are open:
- Movie theaters like Consolidated Theatres will be open on Christmas Day, and it’s a great opportunity to see your favorite flick without the crowd.
- All Zippy’s locations will open on Christmas Day, and most will be open from 6 a.m. to midnight—for both sit-down dining and take-out. Certain locations will close early or open late, so you can check out those holiday hours here.
- Most Safeway locations will be open on Christmas Day.
- TheBus will operate on Christmas but with a Sunday schedule.
- Tamura’s Market is open but closes early at 4 p.m.
- Don Quijote will be open on Christmas. The Honolulu location will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., while the Pearl City and Waipahu locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m

Unfortunately the Byodo-In Temple in Kāneʻohe will be closed on Christmas.

What’s Closed:
- All state-run botanical gardens on Oʻahu—Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden, Wahiawā Botanical Gaden, Foster Botanical Garden, Liliʻuokalani Botanical Garden and Koko Crater Botanical Garden—will be closed on Christmas Day.
- Pearl Harbor National Memorial, and the historic sites in its vicinity, will also be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
- Waimea Valley on Oʻahu’s North Shore will also be closed.
- The Kīpahulu District of Maui’s Haleakalā National Park will be closed.
- Both the Bishop Museum and ʻIolani Palace will be closed.
- In Windward Oʻahu, the Byodo-In Temple will keep its doors closed on Christmas Day.
- Diamond Head State Monument will be closed, so don’t expect to hike to the summit of Lēʻahi.
- Ala Wai, Ewa Villages and Ted Makalena Golf Courses will be closed.
- Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve will be closed on Dec. 25, and it is also closed on New Years Day.
- The Neal S. Blaisdell Center box office will be closed.
- The Honolulu Zoo will be closed on Christmas Day.
- Like the zoo, the The Waikīkī Aquarium will also be closed on Christmas Day.
- Most grocery stores, such as Times, Whole Foods, and Foodland will be closed on Christmas Day.
