1. Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop

While this restaurant may serve hoagies and hot dogs, Leoda’s is really a destination for pies. Freshly baked, scratch-made pies. Apple crumble, banana cream, chocolate-macadamia nut, coconut cream. It also serves savory and hand-held pies, too. Our recommendation: Eat on there—and order a couple more for the road. 820 Olowalu Village Road, Honoapiʻilani Highway, Lahaina, (808) 662-3600, leodas.com
2. T. Komoda Store & Bakery
Open since 1916, T. Komoda Store & Bakery is one of the oldest family-owned stores on the Valley Isle. While its cream puffs are what the bakery is most known for, you don’t want to miss the glazed doughnuts or malasadas, light and crispy and filled with guava, if you want. Go early because these do sell out. 3674 Baldwin Ave., Makawao, (808) 572-7261
3. Maui Pie

Owners Ryan and Kellee Houghtaling opened this bakery in a Kīhei strip mall with homey, homemade pies in flavors like apple, blueberry, lilikoʻi (passion fruit) and mango-strawberry. But you can find savory chicken pot pies, quiches and classic cream pies here, too. 1280 S. Kīhei Road, #101, Kīhei, (808) 298-0473, mauipie.com
4. Sugar Beach Bake Shop

It’s carb heaven at this North Kīhei spot. Find mango cheesecake, cream-filled puffs, malasadas, scones, macadamia nut sticky buns and its signature lilikoʻi key lime pie. All of the pies are baked each morning and include fresh, locally sourced ingredients. 61 S. Kīhei Rd., Kīhei, (808) 757-8285, sugarbeachbakeshop.com

Since 1960, this bakery has been a Maui favorite, known for its crispy manju (Japanese sweet bean paste cookie), freshly made doughnuts, sweet breads, turnovers, pies and shortbread cookies. Must-trys are the chantilly cake, mochi (Japanese rice cakes) made-to-order malasadas and its famous carrot cake (order in advance). 1005 Lower Main Street, Wailuku, (808) 244-7015, homemaidbakery.com
