Names often have significant meaning in Hawaiʻi, given in remembrance of events, ancestors geographical features and moʻolelo (stories).

This practice of providing a thoughtful name also extends beyond people to many local businesses and even popular hotels.

The story behind the Waikiki Malia is one of tradition and transformation.

Waikiki Malia Hotel was once known as the The ʻĀina Luana Apartment Hotel. It boasts a rich history deeply intertwined with the essence of Hawaiʻi. The name “Malia” pays homage to Mary Au Tom, the wife of the original builder and owner, Francis J. Tom. It’s just one way the hotel honors the Islands’ heritage.

In 1989, the beloved Mr. Fukuyoshi Kawazoe, fondly known as “Lucky,” acquired the Waikiki Malia Hotel. Over the years, the hotel has persevered, guided by a strong dedication to caring for guests, the team, and the cherished surroundings.

The hotel recently celebrated a historic partnership. In 2023, MacNaughton—an esteemed local, family-owned real estate developer and investor—partnered with the Kawazoe family to co-own the Waikiki Malia, marking a new era for the hotel. Together, the two local families strengthen the sense of aloha and ʻohana at the hotel, luring so many guests to return and create their home away from home at Waikiki Malia. After all, it is rare to come across locally-owned and operated hotels in Waikiki.

The collaboration also supported a significant renovation project that breathed new life into the beautiful hotel. From the contemporary design elements to the celebration of the Islands represented in local artwork, every detail of the new product reflects Oʻahu’s vibrant spirit.
