Listen to the Soundtracks of Your Favorite Hawaii-Based TV Shows and Films
The Honolulu Symphony Orchestra performs music from shows shot in the Islands in the “Filmed in Hawaii” concert on Jan. 25.
Get ready to be swept away on a melodic journey through the Islands as maestro Richard Kaufman and the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra perform music from films and television shows shot right here in the Islands, at the “Filmed in Hawaii” concert.
The concert, on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Blaisdell Concert Hall, 2 miles from Waikiki, is part of the musicthatPOPS concert series, sponsored by the Sheraton Waikiki.
“Filmed in Hawaii” will feature music that will satisfy both classic and contemporary tastes. Travel back in time with Elmer Bernstein’s majestic “Hawaii” suite, composed for the 1966 film of the same name, and with songs from “South Pacific,” a 1958 film based on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1949 musical. Both films were partially filmed on Kauai. (Portions of “Hawaii’ were also filmed on Oahu.)
Listeners in search of exciting adventures will enjoy music from “Jurassic Park” (1993), which features famous scenes at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu; “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981), which used footage shot on Kauai to mimic the Peruvian jungle; and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, which was filmed on Kauai and Oahu.
Other music includes Hans Zimmer’s poignant “Pearl Harbor” (2001) theme and selections from beloved television series “Hawaii 5-0” (1968-1980, 2010-present) and “Lost” (2004-2010), which have showcased a wide variety of locations on Oahu, such as the Byodo-In Temple in Kaneohe, the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl and the Waialua Sugar Mill.
Kaufman, one of the top conductors of film music, led the Hawaii Symphony last year in the “DISNEY IN CONCERT A Dream is a Wish” performance in January. Kaufman regularly appears with symphony orchestras around the world, including those in San Francisco, London and Dublin. This 2018-19 season marks his 28th year as principal pops conductor of the Orange County, California-based Pacific Symphony, the largest orchestra formed in the U.S. in the past 50 years.
