According to state data, in 2022, more visitors traveled to Maui than any other island. And we know our readers—you!—love this island, too. So we sent writer Grace Maeda and editor at large Catherine Toth Fox to spend a couple of days on the Valley Isle, looking for tucked-away accommodations, secret bays and hidden eateries for this issue. You won’t be disappointed!
Other stories include:
- Most visitors to Oʻahu often drive right through the sleepy town of Wahiawā en route to the North Shore. But editor Kevin Allen stops and wanders around the old plantation town—and gives you a bunch of reasons why you should, too.
- Catherine chats with Hawaiian Volcano Observatory’s scientist-in-charge Ken Hon about his favorite parts of his job, how he got into volcanology and where he was when Mauna Loa erupted last year.
- Freelance writer Laurie Lyons-Makaimoku tours the newly revamped Kona Village, a Rosewood Resort, located on the sacred shores of Kahuwai Bay. This Polyensia-inspired Kona Village resort was recently transformed into a luxe oasis on the Kona Coast.
- On Kauaʻi Kevin spends time at the Kauaʻi Raceway Park, chatting with racers and car enthusiasts who make up a small but passionate group on the Garden Isle, while Catherine takes her 6-year-old son mountain tubing down an old irrigation ditch.
- Freelance writer and foodie Melissa Chang shares her favorite places to get cake noodle, a Chinese dish only found in the Islands.
