In operation since 1955, Waikīkī Beach Services prides itself on its long lineage of legendary, expert watermen, known as the Waikīkī beach boys, who have delivered memorable ocean experiences to numerous visitors throughout the last seven decades. Sharing traditional Hawaiian watersports with visitors is the cornerstone of the company’s mission statement. They share these traditions by fostering a connection to the centuries-old tradition of wa’a he’e nalu (outrigger canoe surfing) with its modern guests.

The origins and first recorded evidence of the outrigger canoe in Hawai’i dates back to 200 AD, even earlier than the emergence of surfing, which dates back to 400 AD. To the Hawaiians, the canoe is a revered part of their culture. Songs, chants and prayers were created praising the canoe. Temples were built in honor of the canoe. Sacred laws, passed down from the gods, governed the creation and use of all canoes. Divergence from these sacred laws resulted in severe punishment. A successful canoe voyage, a fast channel crossing, a big wave caught while canoe surfing—the steersmen who accomplished these feats were believed to have the grace of the gods on their side, and they were to be honored. To this day, attaining the rank of steersman, or canoe first captain, is a significant achievement and extreme honor.

Waikīkī Beach Services has had the privilege of employing some of the best canoe steersmen of their time: Blue Makua, Alex Apo, Blackout Whaley, Dukie Kuahulu, Kimo Makua, Moku Kamaka and Teddy Bush. These watermen were trained by some of the icons of Waikīkī Beach, notably Duke Kahanamoku and Steamboat Mokuahi. This exclusive hui of canoe first captains retain, pass on, and perpetuate Hawaiian watersports in a way that makes them accessible to a worldwide audience.
