Join us for an insider’s guide to this year’s marathon in paradise, complete with the race details and the accompanying celebrations.
Established in 1973, the Honolulu Marathon proudly holds its place as the fourth-largest marathon in the United States, following the footsteps of New York, Chicago, and Boston. What sets it apart is its inclusivity—there are no qualifications required to enter, making it an event where every participant is welcomed and encouraged to cross the finish line.
Scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 10, this year’s marathon will kick off on Ala Moana Boulevard. The scenic course begins along the “path by the ocean,” guiding runners through downtown Honolulu towards Waikīkī and the Honolulu Zoo. Noteworthy landmarks include miles 6-9, offering runners breathtaking views of Diamond Head and Oʻahu’s eastern coastline.
As the race progresses, participants will pass through the communities of Waialae Iki, ʻĀina Haina and Niu Valley. The 16th-mile treats runners to views of Hawaiʻi Kai, featuring glimpses of Koko Head, before a scenic stretch along Kalanianaʻole Highway, passing Kawaikui and Wailupe beach parks.
In the final leg, the route loops by the prestigious Waialae Country Club and past the iconic Diamond Head Lighthouse. The last stretch of the race unfolds along Kapiʻolani Park, past Sans Souci Beach and the Waikīkī Aquarium, ultimately leading participants to the grand finish line near the Kapiʻolani Park Bandstand.
After conquering 26.2 grueling miles, participants will be greeted at the finish line with a medal followed by a festival area with freshly baked malasadas and other post-race treats.
Subsequently, certificates can be picked up at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center on Monday, Dec. 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—a tangible reminder of the incredible achievement of Honolulu’s marathon in paradise.
