Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows closes for yearlong renovation

The hotel will reopen late next year as the Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection.

Earlier this month, the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows started a yearlong renovation and has closed its doors to guests. In May, it was revealed that the resort will be operated by luxury brand Auberge Resorts and plans were made for the extensive $100 million redesign.

The resort, which opened in 1983, is scheduled to reopen in November 2019 with renovated features, such as a new adults-only swimming pool, refreshed guest rooms and suites and an updated lobby area. Even the luxurious Mauna Lani Bungalows, with its private pools and butler service, will be getting additional enhancements. The cultural center where Daniel Akaka Jr., the hotel’s cultural historian, leads storytelling sessions and Hawaiian cultural programming will also be getting a new look, and a new spot closer to the lobby entrance. Also, the Bay Terrace Restaurant will be remodeled and revamped as a new three-course dining experience.

The resort’s two championship golf courses, Wikiwiki Course, Sports and Fitness Club and tennis courts will all be open during the renovation. And while the spa is not undergoing a renovation right now, it will be closed for the time being.

For those looking for a place to stay on the Kohala side of the Big Island, there are still a few options. The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel are just up the road, and the Fairmont Orchid lies in close proximity to the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows.
