This week on the “Have Aloha Will Travel” podcast, editors Catherine Toth Fox and Kevin Allen are joined by Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park public affairs specialist Jessica Ferracane to talk about the recent eruptions at Halemauʻmaʻu Crater, which began again—after a brief slumber—in late September.

Ferracane, who has been with HVNP for a decade and knows the park inside and out, recommends that those looking to see the lava avoid the park’s busiest times—from 6 to 9 p.m.—to see the incredible glow and to bring a jacket since it gets so cold up there! Those worried about vog will want to keep an eye on the weather and wind direction using websites and apps such as Windy and WindFinder. If you want to most accurate information for Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, use the HawaiiSo2Network which monitors the air quality and weather of the summit specifically. Also, stay on the marked trails!

It is also highly recommended that visitors plan ahead before they go to the park. And there’s no better place to learn about the park, its alerts and current eruption conditions than at the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park’s website. Make that your first stop!
