Hokulani Waikiki

You might walk right past its entrance on Waikiki Beach Walk if you didn’t know it was there—a camouflaged doorway, with enclosed fire torches directing you to its lobby. Once inside, the well-designed interior, waterfalls included, cloaks the hubbub outside and allows you to enjoy the retreat you’ve just entered. Our favorite part? A pool and bar area on the roof with views all around, a rare thing to find in Hawaii. Nightly rates from $429. 2181 Kalakaua Ave., Honolulu, (808) 462-4000, hilton.com.
Sheraton Waikiki’s Leahi Club

You may know the 30th floor of the Sheraton Waikiki by its former restaurant name, the Hanohano Room. Its view of Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach and the skyline of hotels has graced postcards for decades. The space, now called the Leahi Club, is exclusive to hotel guests with a Starwood Preferred Guest membership. The lounge benefits include breakfast, snacks, a business center and that gorgeous view—a great bonus to becoming a member. 2255 Kalakaua Ave., Honolulu, (808) 922-4422, sheraton-waikiki.com.
Paradise Bay Resort

There’s a tropical oasis on Kaneohe Bay that some residents don’t even know about, offering great views of the Koolau Mountains. Accommodations include everything from studios to two-bedroom suites, and one of the best perks is that, for a small fee, the hotel will take you by boat to another hidden gem, the Kaneohe Sandbar (Page 41). Suites from $165. 47-039 Lihikai Dr., Kaneohe, (800) 735-5071, paradisebayresort.com.
Lanikai Bed and Breakfast

This tiny, white two-unit property in Lanikai is one of the few licensed vacation rentals on the Windward Side. The Maxeys, second- and third-generation owners of this homey property, live onsite and love sharing meals with their repeat guests, some of whom have been returning annually for two decades. Garden studio from $249 per night, two bedrooms from $325 per night (minimum stay is five nights). (808) 261-7895, lanikaibeachrentals.com.
